The Use of Chickens in Agricultural Research
with Karen Davis, PhD
Chickens are used extensively in agricultural research. Karen will give examples of some of the many types of experiments to which chickens are routinely subjected by poultry science departments and other agribusiness research enterprises in the U.S. and around the world.
Karen Davis, PhD, is the President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl including a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia. Inducted into the National Animal Rights Hall of Fame for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Liberation, Karen is the author of numerous books, essays, articles and campaigns. Her books include A Home for Henny; Instead of Chicken, Instead of Turkey: A Poultryless ‘Poultry’ Potpourri; Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An Inside Look at the Modern Poultry Industry; More Than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality; and The Holocaust and the Henmaid’s Tale: A Case for Comparing Atrocities. Where Are Their Brothers? The Absent and Unwanted Rooster
with Alastor Van Kleeck
Alastor (Justin) Van Kleeck (they/them) has a Ph.D. in English and lives with their partner, Roz, near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They spend most of their time working at the Triangle Chicken Advocates sanctuary, which Alastor and Roz founded in 2014, and which inspired them to start The Microsanctuary Movement together later that year. Alastor has presented at the Animal Rights National Conference, the Conscious Eating Conference, and the Humane Hoax Online Summit, and have been interviewed on podcasts such as Our Hen House, Hope for the Animals Podcast, Beyond Species, The Bearded Vegans and others. Says Who? Thinking Critically About Chicken Care Information
with Tara Hess
Tara Hess will share her important work with The Open Sanctuary Project that is making reliable information and resources about animal care accessible. Providing good care to chickens starts with having good care information, but how can you identify the good from the bad? In this presentation, we’ll discuss the importance of carefully evaluating chicken care information and recommendations so that we can avoid inadvertently sharing or relying on questionable (or outright problematic) guidance.
Tara Hess first became involved in chicken care and rescue while interning at Farm Sanctuary. She spent the next decade working as a caregiver, ultimately moving into shelter management roles and becoming a frequent presenter at Farm Sanctuary’s Farm Animal Care Conference where she often led sessions focused on chicken care. After leaving Farm Sanctuary, she joined The Open Sanctuary Project as their Senior Advisor, where she uses her hands-on experience to help create animal care resources that are accessible and reflect the many nuances of sanctuary work. Despite now having a desk job, she continues to be a chicken caregiver, sharing her home with an amazing rooster named Cantaloupe.
Avian Influenza: Rescue, Care, and Activism in a Time of Challenge
with Rebecca Moore
Rebecca Moore founded and runs The Institute for Animal Happiness (IFAH), a chicken microsanctuary and vegan organization in the Hudson Valley of NYS. She has been rescuing and caring for chickens since 2008. The IFAH recently produced and moderated: Avian Influenza in NYS: What You Need to Know – an educational forum that can be watched on the Institute’s YouTube channel, and she has recently contributed an essay to the book, Vegan Voices, edited by Joanne Kong. The Institute also produces Hudson Valley Vegfest, a fully vegan zero waste festival, and runs The Happy Cart, a 100% free vegan food program in collaboration with People’s Place Food Pantry in Kingston, NY. She can be found 7 days a week cleaning coops and caring for the residents of the Institute, and fully believes chickens can and do inspire revolution.
